Not because I’ve heard the spring peepers. Not because my spring crocuses are blooming. And not because I have buried my shovel in the basement.

Because the ice cream stores have opened! This past weekend I saw the doors of Molly’s Sweet Tooth in Dock Square wide open, with a knot of people spilling out and filling the benches, licking cones. It brought joy to my heart. Before this weekend, it was too cold to call it spring, no matter what the calendar said.

The first small crowds of tourists filled the square and Main Street last weekend too, some in shirtsleeves and shorts, enjoying the sunshine and snapping pictures.

Welcome, season of light!
